C. Approved continuing education. To be acceptable in New Mexico, the CE activity must have been approved by a recognized approval body and must enhance the licensee’s scope of professional development as related to his/her activities in nursing. The participant must receive a certificate of attendance which validates the number of approved CE hours awarded, name of the participant, sponsoring agency, approval body and date attended. Correspondence courses and home-study programs are acceptable, if approved.
(1) Recognized approval bodies for CE for nurses.
(a) National or state recognized nursing organizations.
(b) Other state boards of nursing.
(c) New Mexico board-approved local monitoring systems.
(2) Other CE which may be accepted as approved CE for nurses:
(a) academic credit, computation: one (1) academic credit equals 15 contact hours;
(b) CE units (CEUs) or contact hours awarded by CE divisions within educational
institutions of higher learning;
(c) educational offerings approved through other generally recognized health care
or professional organizations as related to licensee’s nursing practice.
D. Monitoring system. CE hours accrued through educational offerings approved by a local monitoring system shall be accepted as meeting the CE requirements for licensure in New Mexico but may not be accepted by other state boards of nursing as approved CE.
(1) Local monitoring systems must be approved initially and annually by the board of nursing. A guideline for the establishment and operation of a local monitoring system is available in the board office.
(2) The approval of educational offerings shall be determined on the approval criteria developed by the board.
E. Certification or recertification in the registered nursing specialty area. Certification or recertification granted by a national professional organization which uses criteria designed to recognize competence in a specialized area of nursing practice may be used as approved CE. Verification of certification or recertification within the current renewal period is accepted in lieu of the thirty (30) hours of CE required for licensure.

I’m a CMA, how may practice hours do I need to renew my CMA license?
In order to meet the work requirement for recertification as a medication aide, the applicant must administer medications a minimum of 100 hours during the two year period immediately preceding certification renewal: 16.12.4.F.(2). NMAC
I’m a CNP/CNS, how much continuing education do I need to renew my CNP license?
- You will need the CEs required for your RN license (if you are a New Mexico RN, then you will need 30 CEs)
- You will need 20 CEs for your CNP/CNS license. (If you are a New Mexico RN, then you need a total of 50 CEs)
- Fifteen (15) of the 20 CEs must be in pharmacology, regardless of prescriptive authority.
- If you have a DEA license, then five (5) of those 15 CEs in pharmacology, must be in the management of non-cancer 22.214.171.124.R.3(a) NMAC
What do I do if I’m audited?
If you are audited, you will need to follow the instructions on the Notification of CE Audit letter you receive on how to submit proof of your continuing education documentation. Copies of your CEs must be submitted to the Board of Nursing office within 20 days of the date of the letter.
It is important to reply to any correspondence from the Board of Nursing and comply with all requests in a timely manner. Once you are selected for an audit, please know that you will not be excused from complying with the audit, regardless of your personal circumstances. If you have any questions, please contact the Board office.
Should I send in my original CE certificates?
No. You should keep your original CE certificates for your records and only submit copies. Original CE certificates submitted to the Board office will not be returned. If you are using academic credits to meet CE requirements, you will need to have your Educational Institution submit official transcripts directly to the Board office.
I have DEA license. Do I need additional CEs?
